Keep Tahoe food scraps out of landfills

501(C)(3) NONPROFIT · SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

We're a community composting program in South Lake Tahoe. We pick up your food scraps at the curb so they become soil instead of waste and harmful greenhouse gases.

Why food scraps matter here

Food scraps buried in a landfill break down into methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. Composted instead, they become soil that returns to gardens and landscapes across the Sierra.

Scraps in the trash are also a bear problem. Food waste draws bears to cans and dumpsters, creating dangerous situations for animals and people alike. Getting it out of the trash stream helps keep bears wild and neighborhoods safer.

That's the gap Tahoe Composts fills: we pick up your food scraps at the curb, and they head to a compost facility instead of a landfill.

How it works

1

Fill your bin

We give you a countertop bin and a 5-gallon outdoor bin. Scraps go in instead of the trash.

2

Book a Wednesday

You pick the pickup days that work for you and set your bin at the curb that morning.

3

We take it from there

Your scraps get hauled to a composting facility and turned into finished compost.

Join the program

Tahoe Composts runs on its members. Memberships are built around how much your household composts and how often you'd like pickups, and you can change or pause anytime. Whichever one you choose, you're funding a program that keeps food waste out of the landfill.

Not ready to join? You can still help.

Donations fund the things memberships can't cover: composting kits for households getting started, education across the Basin, and capacity as the program grows. Every gift is tax-deductible.
